Elliott Sharp and Sergio Sorrentino Experimental Guitar Performance Becomes a Digital Album

LONDON, UK, Sep. 02, 2021 — RMN Classical is proud and excited to announce that “THE STANDARD CANDLE: LIVE IN BOLOGNA,” a new album by Elliott Sharp and Sergio Sorrentino will be released worldwide on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music and all the digital platforms and stores on September 24, 2021. Produced by Rick Romano for RMN Classical, and distributed by RMN Music, the album is based on the live recording of the same work as performed in Bologna by avant-garde and experimental music pioneer Elliott Sharp and acclaimed guitarist Sergio Sorrentino.

The track-list consists of 6 works recorded live by Roberto Salvati at AngelicA | Centro di Ricerca Musicale – Teatro San Leonardo, Bologna, Italy. The works are created around the astronomical concept of the Standard Candle. “In astronomy, The Standard Candle is an astronomical object whose intensity can be measured as an absolute magnitude and to which other celestial objects may be compared. Electric guitars may also be considered as a point-source of illumination and our standard candle has been abstracted and distorted, perhaps conforming to no standard of measurement but is still, no less real,” composer-guitarist Elliott Sharp says.

As for the performance, Mr Sharp continues “In a seamless process of musical chain reaction and generation, our concert was recorded at Angelica | Centro di Ricerca Musicale, in Bologna and now appears as this, our latest album, The Standard Candle. Sergio and I plugged our guitars and effects directly into the sound system, foregoing the use of amplifiers to allow us maximum clarity and luminosity.”

“Bologna was a magical night for me. Our guitars [… Elliott’s and mine] immediately merged into a single sound entity, also thanks to the wonderful audience in the theatre. It was an unforgettable moment, a pure burst of creativity that we are now happy to share with an even wider audience. On top of that, sharing the stage with one of my favourite guitar heroes pushed me to try things I hadn’t imagined before,” guitarist Sergio Sorrentino says.

“It’s an immense honour to have the opportunity to produce and release such an experimental album, created live by two extremely talented iconic artists. This is an album where sound has to be explored as you would with the universe, with an open and curious mind. And there you will find incredible new things that will reveal new ways of creating and making music,” RMN Music producer Rick Romano says.

THE STANDARD CANDLE: LIVE IN BOLOGNA” will be available on all the digital platforms and stores on Friday, September 24, 2021, on RMN Classical.
