Rei Hamakawa


Rei Hamakawa was born in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo, Japan and he is currently a professor in the Faculty of Engineering, Chukyo University, Japan.

He is also a composer and pianist who has won several national competitions in Japan. He has been selected as one of the winners at the RMN International Call for Piano Solo Works, in 2018. He also won the Grand Prize at the Wittgenstein Memorial International Piano Competition for Left hand (Amateur Category), 2018.

For several years, he has been suffering from focal dystonia in his right hand.

At present, he mainly composes pieces for the left hand alone and performs piano pieces with the same constraint.
