Benjamin Montgomery


montgomeryBenjamin Montgomery (b. 1991) is originally from Bellefonte, Pennsylvania and started his musical studies as a saxophonist. He began composing at 16 and went on to receive a B.M. in music composition from Ithaca College (Ithaca, NY) where he studied with Dana Wilson and Jorge Villavicencio Grossmann. While there, he was the recipient of the Richard K. Joseph Prize in 2011 and the Louis Smadbeck Award in 2013. He continued his studies at Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI) where he received M.M. degrees in music composition and in theory, studying under Ricardo Lorenz and Jere Hutcheson and receiving recognition through the Honors Competition in 2015 and the Large Ensemble Competition in 2016. He is currently continuing his studies and teaching at the University of Miami (Coral Gables, FL) where he is pursuing a D.M.A. in music composition, working closely with Dorothy Hindman, Charles Mason, and Juraj Kojs.

Benjamin composes in a variety of vocal, instrumental, and electronic mediums. He views each piece as a personal journey to understand more about human perception, spiritual beliefs, and emotional energy, inviting listeners to consider their own nuances of meaning. His music has been performed throughout the United States and Italy, and he has been in residence at festivals such as New Music on the Point, the Oregon Bach Festival, and the Cortona Sessions for New Music. He was the Student Composer in Residence with Seraphic Fire for the 2017-2018 season, during which the ensemble premiered his work “To Hear With Eyes.”
