Born in Edinburgh and gaining a B.Mus at the university, John trained and worked as a music teacher before spending time studying the music of Luciano Berio. Returning to teaching in Glasgow, he developed an interest in jazz and had several charts premiered by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland as well as having music published in the UK and Australia.

John worked with Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland and was Principal Teacher of Music at Dunfermline High School 1999-2010.

John’s compositions include chamber music, music for educational use and music for wind band and orchestra. His music has featured on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and at the Edinburgh Society of Musicians and has been premièred by guitarist Stephen Morrison, Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society (in which he plays oboe), The Assembly Project, Scottish Chamber Orchestra players, the London Contemporary Chamber Orchestra, Edinburgh University Composers’ Orchestra and the Red Note Ensemble. At the 2016 St. Magnus Festival the Hebrides Ensemble premièred his Midsummer Sunrise in a concert dedicated to the memory of Peter Maxwell Davies that was later broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
